Downtown Outreach works closely with social service agencies
throughout the Metro. We are a secular 501(c)(3) organization, operating on the
premises of St. Mary's Episcopal Church on the East Side of Downtown. Every
Saturday we provide a hot lunch and groceries. Our policy allows anyone who is
struggling, regardless of income or geographic location, to find hunger relief
once a week. We train our volunteers to welcome our clients with respect, communal acceptance, and a nonjudgmental spirit.
- Since opening in 1992, we've served over 150,000 meals
- We've distributed over 60,000 bags of groceries
- Our entire operation is run by volunteers and volunteer staff, except for the Executive Director
Lunches are freshly prepared in our licensed commercial kitchen. Ingredients come from commercial purveyors, USDA commodity foods, local farmers, and agencies like Harvesters. We also rely on donations from community partners. Our grocery bags are stocked with protein items, vegetables, cereals, personal care items, and other healthful components. Bags for the homeless are prepared separately, so as not to require preparation. During the holidays, we offer special bags with ham, turkey, and other special foods.
